Nonprofit hospitals report charity care to two federal regulators. The numbers don't match.
Yale New Haven Hospital reported $113.1M in financial assistance to the IRS and $35.6M in charity care to CMS for the same fiscal year, on a comparable expense base. Of the 99 hospitals where the comparison is genuinely apples-to-apples, 22 differ by more than 50%. A gap is not an accusation — the two forms define charity care differently — but until now there was no fast way to check it for a specific hospital.
